BRIEF: President Obama wins second term

Nov 09, 2012 (The Newberry Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- President Barack Hussein Obama made history as he won re-election Wednesday morning as the 44th president of the United States.

Obama first made history in 2008 as he became the first black person to become president of the country and made history again as he gained a second term.

On election night, which was Tuesday, the results were very close between Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Due to the close race, results were not finalized until early Wednesday morning after The Newberry Observer was published.

On a national level, Obama received 61,176,692 or 50 percent of the vote while Romney received 58,173,376 or 48 percent of the votes in popular votes.

In terms of electoral votes, Obama received 303 or 50 percent while Romey received 206 or 48 percent. It takes at least 270 electoral votes to win.

In South Carolina, Romney won with 1,029,835 popular votes and nine electoral votes while Obama had 825,194 popular votes and no electoral votes.

Zooming into Newberry County, Romney carried 9,218 votes while Obama carried 6,891 votes. There were also three other presidential candidates who each had less than 100 votes per candidate.
