Chamber plans weekend art festival

Organizers at the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce hope locals will get an early jump on their holiday shopping this weekend during the first annual Deming Holiday Art Festival.
The free festival will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Special Events Center, 2300 E. Pine St. It will include more than 45 exhibitors from Southwestern New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.
"Here's an opportunity for people to start their holiday shopping early and to get something a little different, a little unique," Mary Galbraith, chamber director, said.
The festival will include a large spread of horsehoe art, paintings, jewelry, knives and knife sharpening, wreaths, gourds, baskets, pottery and more. To Galbraith, the festival's mission will be twofold: To not only offer unique gift ideas, but to show off local talent to consumers who might not otherwise see it.
"They see Deming as a community that has not been tapped where they can show their artistic capabilities," she said of artists from Deming and surrounding areas.
The event will also include a variety of food and drink vendors, including soup, salad and deserts.
"This is something I have been told years back there was an organization that held an arts festival, so I said let's try it and see what happens," she said. "The response has been unbelievable."
She says that if the community would like to see the event continue, they should come out over the weekend and support it.
