Modesto City Schools to dismiss three principals, other administrators

MODESTO, Dec 18, 2012 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Modesto City Schools has told three high school principals and a number of other administrators they will lose their jobs June 30, The Bee has learned.

The district would not confirm the number or names of those notified Thursday they will be leaving, but said it was the most administrative dismissals in one year in memory.

Associate Superintendent Ginger Johnson said the district wanted to give those involved ample time to make other plans. Unlike teachers, the district's administrators have no union and work on year to year contracts. Some of those individuals may return in teaching positions.

The district will begin recruiting to fill the administrative posts for 2013-14, she said, adding that teachers at those sites and community leaders will be involved in the hiring.

Johnson said the district is moving decisively to put "professional learning communities" in place at schools. "It's not any one person that will turn our schools around. It will be a collaboration," she said.

She said the district is not considering closing or consolidating any schools.

"We do not make these difficult decisions lightly as I know that change is hard for a site. I believe our decisions are in the best interest of MCS," Johnson said.
