Crime Stoppers tips pay off

Jan 10, 2013 (The Pueblo Chieftain - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Criminals beware! Pueblo Crime Stoppers officials said Wednesday that the organization will continue its partnerships with local law enforcement to help put criminals away.

Detective Jeff Shay, of the criminal investigations division of the Pueblo Police Department, released the Crime Stoppers 2012 statistics during a press conference at the Pueblo Convention Center.

Last year, Crime Stoppers received 1,441 tips which led to 74 arrests, Shay said.

The organization sent out 54 press releases and paid rewards in the amount of $8,090 to tipsters.

Shay said 134 cases were cleared.

"2012 was a pretty good year," Shay said.

Shay said when Crime Stoppers sends out press releases, it's because police are at a dead end.

"We couldn't solve a lot of crimes that we do without the public's help. We work closely with the media and nearly every press release sent out turned in tips that helped us complete the case," Shay said.

Since Pueblo Crime Stoppers inception in 1983, the organization has helped with 1,958 arrests and 2,679 cases cleared including 21 homicides.

The organization has paid out $213,889 in rewards to tipsters and has recovered property in the amount of $11,171,410. The organization has helped seize $14,111,945 worth of narcotics.

"When you take it down to a caseby- case basis, that's pretty incredible," said John Koncilja III, president of Pueblo Crime Stoppers.

"We have a lot of support from a lot of different organizations throughout our community, but there are none tighter than the law enforcement agencies that we work with in Pueblo County," Koncilja said.

Police Chief Luis Velez, Fire Chief Chris Riley and Pueblo County Sheriff's Office Bureau Chief Charlene Graham all spoke about the importance of partnerships with Crime Stoppers.

District Attorney Jeff Chostner also spoke in support of the organization.
