South Odessa Shooting injures man
Jan 18, 2013 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Odessa police reported one man hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound after a Thursday evening shooting in the 400 block of Seminole Street and on nearby Snyder Street.
A caller reported a fight and possible shooting at about 5:54 p.m. near the 900 block of Snyder Street. A second caller reported shots fired in the Seminole area, where officers were later seen collecting shell casings and glass from a vehicle window. The investigation was ongoing by press time.
The victim, who police did not immediately identify, was conscious at Medical Center Hospital after the shooting, said Lt. Wes Carta. The man was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.
By about 7:30 p.m., Carta said nothing had indicated the victim was anything other than an innocent bystander.
Two grandmothers who live in the area described a fight between several men and shots fired from an SUV and a truck.
"I'm telling you, it was too scary," said Rivie Willard. "Those guns were just going and going. Boom Boom Boom."
Willard said she ran inside her home when the shooting began, worried about six grandchildren inside her home, ages 2 to 7. Her neighbor, Jeanie Martin, said she had three grandchildren inside her home and expressed anger at the violence, which reportedly began two blocks away on Snyder Street.
"They brought all this mess over here," Martin said.
Residents reported a red SUV and a black Ford pickup with blacked-out rims leaving the area. Officers were searching for those vehicles after the shooting, but Carta said investigators had not yet determined whether they were involved in the shooting or simply fleeing from it.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Odessa Police Department at 432-333-3641 or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-8477.
"In cases like this, any information is helpful, as far as figuring out who was involved and who did what," Carta said.
