Tractor-trailer strikes overpass

Jan 21, 2013 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A tractor-trailer that crashed into an overpass, one of several recent wrecks in which a trailer struck a bridge, was not following the permit it was issued, according to a Department of Public Safety investigation.

The truck struck the overpass at the Highway 191 and Faudree Road intersection on Sunday morning.

Texas Department of Transportation Odessa spokesman Gene Powell said the DPS investigation found out that the load on the semi-truck was not only too large but the truck was not on the correct route.

"All we know right now is that there's some damage to one of the beams," Powell said. "So we closed the shoulder of (Highway) 191 and we put a tarp under it so debris can't fall." Powell said the bridge division of TxDOT out of Austin would make its way out to Odessa to inspect the bridge and assess the damage.

With large tractor-trailer loads, Powell said drivers must obtain a permit for a specific type of load which also specifies the route the driver must take.

In this case, Powell said DPS determined that the driver was carrying the incorrect size load and tried to take a "shortcut" from the allowed route, causing the accident.

"The accidents are most certainly preventable," Powell said. "People just have to pay attention to what they're doing." Follow Odessa American on twitter @OdessaAmerican, like us on Facebook at Odessa American or call 432-333-7714 for the main newsroom line.
