AME Info, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, telecommunications briefs [AME Info, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates]

(AME Info (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 31--BAHRAIN TO AUCTION RADIO SPECTRUM: Bahrain is set to auction radio spectrum for next-generation networks, despite objections by the kingdom's three mobile operators, Gulf Daily News has reported. The existing operators said that any further competition may jeopardise their financial viability. The auction will comprise five lots of spectrum primarily for long-term evolution, or 4G networks, which the Telecoms Regulatory Authority (TRA) said were inadequate in an earlier strategy document. The winning bidders are expected to be announced in April.

LEBANON EXTENDS ALFA, TOUCH CONTRACTS BY ONE MONTH: The Lebanese cabinet has approved the extension of the operation licences of Touch and Alfa mobile companies for a maximum of one month to pave the way for a new tender, The Daily Star has reported. The government will have two options, the first of which is to allow the ministry to operate the networks for three months, or extend the contracts with the two current companies for three more months, telecoms minister Nicolas Sehnaoui told the cabinet. According to the current contracts, both touch and Alfa operate the networks on behalf of the state in return for a monthly fee. The contracts are renewed once a year.

JORDANIAN TELECOMS OPERATORS SHOWED NO INTEREST IN BROADBAND PROJECT: Jordanian information and communications technology ministry has said it had not received an official request from any of the kingdom's telecoms operators to complete the National Broadband Network project, Jordan Times has reported. If no requests are submitted by the end of the week, the ministry will start looking into the best ways to complete the project and float a tender to that end, said ministry spokesperson, Haitham Al Qaisi.
