2 suburban banks robbed

Feb 08, 2013 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two suburban branch banks were robbed this afternoon, one in Aurora and another in Mount Prospect, authorities said.

In the first holdup, a man robbed a Banco Popular branch at 2 S. Broadway Ave. in downtown Aurora about 12:10 p.m., according to Aurora Police. The man went in through a front door, walked up to a teller window and handed a teller a note demanding money, police said in a news release.

The man took cash from the teller and left the bank, then got into a waiting cab, police said. The cab was last seen going south on Broadway.

The man was described as white, in his 30s, standing 5-foot-6 and weighing about 190 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

In what officials believe was an unrelated robbery, a man walked into a Bank of America branch at 1080 S. Elmhurst Road in Mount Prospect about 2:45 p.m., according to FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde.

The man gave a teller a note and fled with cash, Hyde said. The Mount Prospect robber was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, grey gloves and a full-face mask that was white with black stripes, Hyde said. He stood about 6 feet to 6-foot-2 and had a medium build, according to Mount Prospect Police.

No one was injured in either robbery. It is believed a different man committed each robbery, authorities said.

Anyone with information on one of the robberies is asked to call local police or the Chicago FBI at 312-421-6700. Twitter: @ChicagoBreaking ___ (c)2013 the Chicago Tribune Visit the Chicago Tribune at Distributed by MCT Information Services
