BRIEF: Erie priest to talk on MSNBC today about pope's decision to resign

Feb 11, 2013 (Erie Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Monsignor Tom McSweeny got the call from MSNBC at 6:45 this morning.

Pope Benedict XVI had announced he will resign on Feb. 28. The cable news channel wanted to talk with McSweeny, who has occasionally appeared as an on-air analyst on issues related to the Catholic Church and papacy.

He's now scheduled to do a live phone interview today at 11:30 a.m. on MSNBC.

McSweeney, the pastor of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Erie, worked with the channel in 2008 to provide coverage of Benedict's visit to New York City.

The theater-trained Erie priest, who formerly worked for the Christophers in New York, said the pope's announcement wasn't a complete surprise.

"It starts to make sense when you look at the frailty of this pope," McSweeney said.
