Vacationing cop to the rescue

AUBURN, Feb 13, 2013 (Sun Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- So much for vacation.

Auburn police Detective Jason Moore was in Orlando, Fla., with his family Tuesday when he saw a Jeep flip in front of him. A 15-year veteran of the force, Moore sprang into action.

He was driving through an intersection at Continental Gateway and International drives when something caught his eye.

Reached by email Tuesday night, Moore described what happened next.

"I looked back and through the bushes I could see the SUV, a Jeep Liberty, was spiraling through the air," Moore wrote. "It landed on its roof, rolled and came to rest on the passenger side." The Jeep had collided with a Saturn, Moore said, which also came to rest, battered, in the intersection.

"My wife called 911 as I checked the occupants of the vehicles," Moore said. "The driver of the Saturn insisted that he was OK and urged me to continue on to the Jeep.

"As I made my way to the Jeep I could see the male driver suspended by his seat belt and the bloody hands of the female passenger. Both were moving and I could hear them talking. I made contact with the driver. He was attempting to climb through his door window and I asked him to try the door first. It opened so I held it up for him until he was able to hold it himself. I then climbed up onto the Jeep and helped him out the rest of the way. He then held the door while I hoisted his wife out" In spite of the drama, no one was seriously hurt. The driver of the Jeep was not injured, Moore said. His passenger suffered minor cuts.

"They are from Iceland and were on their way to the airport," Moore said, "and she was very concerned about missing their flight home." The crash was being investigated by Orlando police. On Wednesday, Moore resumed his vacation.
