Splunk (News - Alert), a provider of software for real-time operational intelligence, has selected and deployed Opscode Hosted Chef to deliver its Splunk Storm SaaS platform.

Splunk Storm is the new Splunk service for analyzing and troubleshooting cloud applications.

Thanks to Hosted Chef, Splunk has been able to automate the Amazon EC2 infrastructure supporting Splunk Storm, enabling continuous delivery of application updates, while significantly reducing manual resource management.

"As more organizations and developers move projects to the cloud, Splunk Storm offers them a way to immediately gain visibility and insight into cloud-based applications," Gaurav Gupta, vice president of cloud products, Splunk, said in a statement.

"Hosted Chef enables us to provide our customers the ability to monitor, search and analyze machine data in the cloud. Its ability to automate basic configuration to application updates has helped us to bring innovation to market much faster," said Gupta.

Adam Jacob, chief customer officer, Opscode said Splunk has already proven to be an invaluable tool for enterprise IT.

"By using Hosted Chef to deliver the same differentiated value via a SaaS (News - Alert) platform, Splunk is bringing real visibility and analytics to cloud computing," said Jacob.

Hosted Chef provides the Splunk Storm team with a model for reuse that enables servers, environments and application delivery to be automated and integrated into a seamless development pipeline.

According to company officials, by automating everything from basic configuration and maintenance to infrastructure-wide updates and application delivery, Splunk has created a highly consistent, reliable SaaS platform with minimal management overhead.

Earlier in October, Opscode, a major player in cloud infrastructure automation, announced Chef for OpenStack, delivering a centralized, defined collection of code and best practices for using Chef to create and automate OpenStack infrastructures, as well as deploying and managing application stacks on OpenStack infrastructure.

Chef for OpenStack combines a centralized repository of cookbooks with key features of Hosted Chef and Private Chef to deliver a comprehensive reference framework for improving business agility and operating efficiency with OpenStack. The new solution is supported by Opscode's enterprise services practice and a broad ecosystem of technology partners, including Rackspace, Dell, DreamHost, HP and Intel (News - Alert).

Opscode also announced integration via the Knife command-line for OpenStack Folsom, enabling users to rapidly create, bootstrap and manage OpenStack Folsom compute instances.
