The Hoke County emergency communications call center is finally nearing completion after the devastating ammonia leak in a nearby area that drove people from the region.

About the same time last year, as reported by Nancy McCleary from, the leak at a poultry processing plant on East Central Avenue caused a serious problem for the director of Hoke County's Emergency Communications, Jimmy Stewart.

Faced with this unexpected problem, and with no time to wait for emergency response, Stewart urged his staff to evacuate.

After the renovations conclude, the new office will be operational as a new communications center off East Palmer Road.

The facility should cheer up many who are going to benefit from the grants and funds that helped them erect the new 3,300-square-foot building, estimated to be around $1.1 million.

All work is almost complete, and the dispatcher's equipment is in its rightful place, according to McCleary, who notes some work is still left in the back room, where Stewart intends to install other electronics such as computer servers and recording equipment.

Once everyone moves in, they’ll be able to enjoy brand new and spacious offices and a kitchen.

Evacuation plans are never something to be taken lightly or as optional. Last year, dozens of residents had to evacuate the second floor of Mattoon Tower when a fire broke out in the building.
