In case of a traffic accident, emergency call units automatically transmit lifesaving information, such as vehicle location information, to the nearest emergency call center, thereby speeding up the arrival of emergency response vehicles. The emergency call units are helpful for telematics services such as stolen vehicle tracking and remote control.

Many countries are adapting emergency call regulations in order to boost safety and convenience for commuters. Emergency call regulations are mandatory in Russia beginning October 2014 and in Europe starting in October 2015, to provide expanded functionality needed for telematics services, such as stolen vehicle tracking and remote control.

Recently, GLONASS UNION, VTT, Gemalto and FUJITSU TEN, a company that develops ECLIPSE car navigation brand and advanced safety systems, teamed up to demonstrate live emergency call system at the ITS European Congress 2014 venue.

The event was mainly aimed at demonstrating interchangeability between the European eCall system and the Russian ERA-GLONASS system. Demonstrations were carried out concurrently in Europe and Russia for the first time in the world.

Marcel Visser, member of the ERTICO Supervisory Board and Director Business Development, Automotive Segment, Gemalto (News - Alert) said,  “This first ever simultaneous and live emergency eCall interoperability demonstration at the 2014 European ITS Congress in Helsinki highlights the power of advanced connected car technology to improve road and driver safety.”

The demonstrations mainly checked that a vehicle equipped with ERA-GLONASS inducts an emergency call (eCall) to Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Europe, and similarly that a vehicle equipped with eCall starts an emergency call (ERA-GLONASS) to PSAP in Russia. Thus, the interoperability between eCall and ERA-GLONASS was established.

Evgeni Meilikhov, Development Director, ERA-GLONASS Project, GLONASS Union said that  that they were glad to demonstrate harmonized operation of ERA-GLONASS and eCall systems together with their partners ERTICO and Fujitsu (News - Alert) Ten at the 10th ITS European Congress.
