Openwave's New Version of Its Media Optimization Offer

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Openwave announced the availability of a new version of its intelligent, content and context aware media optimization solution. According to the company, the solution is a useful tool for the service providers as it helps them to better maintain their network resources.

Reducing costs and increasing effective bandwidth, Openwave (News - Alert) Media Optimizer adds value to the network with intelligent, device- and policy-aware delivery of online video content.

With the help of this latest version of Media Optimizer, mobile network operators can pre-determine automated actions to be taken as soon as the mobile network reaches certain thresholds. Working to ensure that the video viewing experience of the subscribers is maintained even during times of peak network usage, these actions are intelligently enabled based on real time network conditions.

“Mobile video is growing rapidly in popularity and many operators are bracing themselves for the exponential growth in mobile data traffic that is expected in the coming years,” said John Giere (News - Alert), senior vice president of products and marketing at Openwave, in a press release. “While 4G upgrades are expected to absorb some of this data demand, dynamic in-network software solutions will play an essential role in enabling greater network efficiencies for mobile network operators.”

Openwave Media Optimizer provides benefits such as congestion and content aware optimization, dynamic updates, and adaptive streaming. The solution determines the content type (like news vs. sports action) and accordingly and applies intelligent optimization actions that will maintain the video viewing experience of the subscribers. It also helps operators to minimize potential network disruption challenges by pushing the required updates via the cloud.

Recently, the company licensed certain patents to Mobixell/724 Solutions Inc., according to a recent announcement. To protect its IP rights, Openwave Systems Inc (News - Alert). filed a patent infringement lawsuit against 724 Solutions (US) Inc. and 724 Solutions Software Inc. (collectively "724 Solutions") in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on July 31, 2009. Openwave alleged that 724 Solutions (News - Alert) had infringed various
