Boingo Granting Wishes in Miles

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Boingo Wireless, with the world’s largest network of WiFi (News - Alert) hotspots, announced that it will be supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s cause to generate more than one million of donated airline miles. Boingo (News - Alert) will match individual flier mile donation, as well as donate 100 Delta SkyMiles. Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes almost every 40 minutes to children with life-threatening medical conditions in the United States, and has granted close to 200,000 wishes since 1980.

Boingo has more than 125,000 hotspots across the world, and these include hundreds of popular airports, thousands of hotels, and millions of coffee shops and cafes, for its customers to connect while they are travelling, via their smartphones, laptops, or hotel computers. It supports the Make-A-Wish cause by donating an equivalent amount that will be donated by every individual airline miles. Also, Boingo will donate 100 Delta SkyMiles on behalf of every subscriber who will sign up for the Boingo Unlimited $9.95 plan, valid from Sept. 30 through Nov. 15.

In a press release, the President and CEO for Boingo Wireless (News - Alert), Dave Hogan, said, “We’re proud to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation as they continue to empower and delight thousands of children around the world through their wish-granting work. We’re inspired by the spirit and strength of the children, and we take to heart the mission to make their wishes come true.”

More than 60 percent of the wishes require air travel as the children may wish to see some new place or visit their idols. Walt Disney (News - Alert) is the most popular wish destination, and the estimated annual 2.5 billion airline miles are required every year. There are four steps for Make-A-Wish to grant any wish. First, is the referral from the attending physician, the parents and the patient. Next, the medical eligibility of the child must be determined, as to how serious the child’s condition and the hope for complete recovery. Then, one of wish team will meet up with the child to discuss and encourage their imagination to name their one wish. The wish will granted only if the child meets all the stipulations. Only children from three to 18 years of age are eligible.

The President and CEO for Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, David Williams, added that, “Boingo’s generous sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation reflects their commitment to volunteerism and community well-being. The airline miles generated through Boingo’s efforts will help us get wish kids and their families to their fondest wish destinations and preserve critical financial resources.”
