Newport Media and ALPS Address Demanding Japanese Handset Market

By Hans Lewis, TMCnet Contributor

Newport Media, a fabless semiconductor company that supplies products to the mobile broadcast media industry, today announced that ALPS has formally qualified Newport Media’s 65nm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) single-chip solution.

Additionally, it has begun high-volume, mass production of the modules for Japan’s Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) digital television standard.

“The Japanese cellular telephone is the most demanding application for ISDB-T receiver modules,” said Kazuhiko Ueda, engineering group manager of ALPS Electric. “Newport Media’s single die ISDB-T solution enables ALPS to provide customers with a best-in-class module from a performance and size perspective while using very cost effective construction technology which our handset customers find very attractive.”

The ALPS ISDB-T module integrates the NMI325 SoC in wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP) along with a UHF band filter, crystal and passive components to create an entire ISDB-T receiver subsystem that simplifies the customers’ handset designs while conserving precious board space.

Newport Media has assembled a management and development team with comprehensive system semiconductor experience in wireless handset and digital set-top box industries. Newport Media’s development team leverages its collective experience in these converging industries to develop broadcast multimedia architectures and IC implementations with unprecedented performance, power consumption, size and cost.
