Eutelsat (News - Alert) Communications, a satellite operator in Europe, announced a distribution agreement between its Skylogic subsidiary and TeliaSonera.
The agreement enables TeliaSonera (News - Alert) to offer the new-generation Tooway satellite broadband services in Finland.
TeliaSonera will use the Tooway service, which will be delivered via Eutelsat 's new KA-SAT satellite.
Terrestrial or wireless networks have many limitations. The TeliaSonera broadband services are expected to help bridge the digital divide by offering high-speed broadband services to customers beyond reach of terrestrial or wireless networks.
“We are proud and pleased to be able to bring this latest consumer technology to Finland. For the first time, the service will make broadband available to all Finns,” said Juha-PekkaWeckstrom, managing director, TeliaSonera Finland.
“The service will be popular with users in both sparsely-populated and built-up areas, because we are convinced that the high data transfer rates and reasonable pricing are an attractive combination,” Juha-PekkaWeckstrom added.
As per the distribution agreement, the service will be rolled out first in Finland. TeliaSonera is planning to connect thousands of customers to Tooway over the next three years.
“Already selected to support National Broadband Programmes in Ireland, Switzerland and Italy, Tooway is perfectly positioned to serve the needs of TeliaSonera's customers in rural and urban not spot areas,” ArduinoPatacchini, CEO of Skylogic.
“We are delighted to be working with TeliaSonera to extend broadband to all, and look forward to building a close and longstanding partnership which contributes to achieving an inclusive and high-quality broadband environment in TeliaSonera's markets,” ArduinoPatacchini added.
The Tooway satellite broadband offers download speeds of up to 10 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 4 Mbps. The satellite broadband service will bring fast and affordable Internet access for TeliaSonera customers in areas with limited alternative solutions for broadband.
Customers will gain from the Tooway solution which consists of a small satellite dish and a modem connected to the PC giving customers Internet access with no need for a telephone line.
Earlier in March, Skylogic signed a distribution agreement with Sat Internet Services to market Eutelsat's Tooway service to users in Germany. Sat Internet Services offers powerful Internet access systems via satellite for broadband services using the KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite.
