Newtec Pushes 310 Mbps over 36Mhz Satellite Transponder

Belgium-based Newtec (News - Alert) continues to push broadband speeds via satellite broadcasting, with its latest coup demonstrating 310 Mbps over a 36 Mhz transponder using existing antenna and power infrastructure on UAE's Yahsat Y1A. 

Newtec says no one has done a full-duplex STM-1 circuit (2 x 155 Mbps) on a 36 Mhz transponder. The company will be making its next generation technology commercially available during 2012.

The link was established using Newtec's new satellite IP modulators and modems in combination with its bandwidth cancellations and including its currently available Clean Channel Technology (CCT) and Bandwidth Cancellation, plus its forthcoming Wideband technology. CCT improves satellite link efficiency by up to 15 percent while Bandwidth cancellation combines forward and return transmission in the same satellite bandwidth so extra capacity can be made available.

Yahsat is going to use Newtec's gear on Y1A, a satellite with 9 antennas and a combination of C-band and Ku-band transponders. Earlier this year, Yahsat selected Newtech (News - Alert) as the vendor to provide the hardware for its upcoming YahCarrier service, a Ka band based IP trunking system. YahCarrier will operate from Yahsat's Yahsat Y1B Ka-band satellite scheduled to be launched this month.

This isn't the first time Newtec has demonstrated higher speeds on operational satellite transponders.   Before Satellite 2012, it announced it had used its latest modem technology and a 4.5 meter ground antenna to deliver 372 Mbps bidirectional throughput and 313 Mbps unidirectional throughput on a 72 Mhz Intelsat (News - Alert) Ku-band transponder.

Newtec would like to update the DVB-S2 standard to get other speed increases. The company feels the 10 year old DVB standard needs updating, including an increased number of modulation and coding schemes.   Moving from 32APSK to 64APSK could provide both higher transmission speeds and lower operational costs with applications using bigger antennas and more powerful transponders.

Ka-band is also big for Newtec. In addition to the to the YahCarrier service, Newtech will be supplying the consumer equipment for SES (News - Alert) Evolution. The service will use Ka-band Sat3Play terminals and related hub infrastructure to deliver download speeds beyond 10 Mbps to European subscribers. SES plans to provide high-speed Ka-band service through its ASTRA 2F, 2E, and 2G satellites, with the first satellite -- ASTRA 2F -- schedule for launch later in 2012.

Newtech also announced it will be providing Sat3Play hub and terminal hardware for InSat to provide IP trunking, VSAT services, and broadband IP access services through Avanta's HYLAS 2 Ka-band satellite to Afghanistan. HYLAS 2 is slated for launch in June.
