Panasonic Avionics Signs Contract with Intelsat for 1 Gbps Capacity on Intelsat EpicNG Satellite Platform

By Sujata Garud, TMCnet Contributor

Panasonic (News - Alert) Avionics Corporation has contracted with Intelsat, a global provider of satellite services, for up to 1 Gbps of capacity on the newly announced Intelsat EpicNG satellite platform. Panasonic will be using this capacity in the delivery of aeronautical consumer broadband and live TV services. Panasonic has zeroed down on the Intelsat (News - Alert) EpicNG satellite platform to make sure the highest possible bandwidth for existing and future airline customers.

In a press release, Steve Spengler, EVP of sales, marketing and strategy for Intelsat, said, “This agreement demonstrates Intelsat's success in delivering infrastructure for the burgeoning mobility segment, which we are addressing through the completion of our dedicated global mobility fabric in early 2013 and as one of the targeted applications of our Intelsat EpicNG platform.”

With Intelsat EpicNG, about 80 Mbps per aircraft and 200 Mbps per spot beam will be available to any Panasonic-equipped aircraft flying the high-traffic route spanning the United States and North Atlantic. Panasonic will be able to enhance broadband service by leveraging Intelsat's broad geographic coverage and specialized beams. Panasonic will be expanding in the near-term by using capacity on two satellites within Intelsat's Ku-band global broadband mobility platform. These services will be complemented by high throughput Ku-band capacity on Intelsat 29e, the first of the Intelsat EpicNG satellites when the platform is launched in 2015.

Intelsat’s integrated satellite and IntelsatONE terrestrial infrastructure offers a high performance, global platform for mobility leaders such as Panasonic that needs a geographically diverse and advanced broadband infrastructure. Intelsat is the only company offering a seamless combination of high-throughput spot beams and wide beams to deliver a combination of broadband and cost-effective broadcast.

Paul Margis, chief executive officer for Panasonic Avionics Corporation, said, "As we continue to equip more and more aircraft with our broadband services, we are taking proactive steps that ensure the best possible connectivity solution for our customers. With Intelsat EpicNG, Panasonic will use Ku-band technology to deliver to airlines the highest possible throughput capacity on a global, open architecture platform, without any costly changes to antenna equipment or unnecessary aircraft downtime."

Intelsat was recently in news when the company announced deployment of Intelsat 19 solar array. Intelsat 19 will make it achievable for customers to use the satellite service to communicate on both C- and Ku-bands.
