VSAT from MTN (News - Alert) Satellite Communications is a technology used to explain two-way-satellite communications, which transmits and receives data from a relatively small satellite dish on Earth. Then, it communicates with an orbiting geostationary satellite. VSAT systems can be relatively small, using small dish antennas less than three meters and generally operate in the Ku-Band and C-Band frequencies, depending on bandwidth requirement (data speed and/or communications channels).
Recently, this technology from the company was selected by Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ship, Carnival Breeze. Carnival used the telecommunications skills of MTN and WMS to provide a "shore-side" experience to more than 4,000 passengers and nearly 1,800 crew members on each sailing during its first month in service.
The company partnered with Wireless Maritime Services (WMS), a provider of cellular service to the cruise line and ferry industry for this project. Carnival Breeze also used MTN's Internet Café solution providing access to passengers and crew on mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops and fixed PCs to stay connected while at sea, the company stated in a press release.
“There is clearly a demand by users to access data from their personal mobile devices as well as having the ability to surf the Internet while at sea," said Brent Horwitz, SVP and GM for MTN Cruise and Ferry Services. "The number of Internet and mobile minutes used on the inaugural sailing of the Carnival Breeze underscores the importance of today's society of staying connected even while on vacation. MTN is proud of our collective success with Carnival over the years.”
Recently, the company announced the availability of MTN Worldwide TV for government vessels. The company states that seafarers can now have the ability to watch numerous news and entertainment programming from international television networks without interruption.
