ViaSat Wins $4.5M Order from U.S. DoD

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

The Department of Defense has awarded a new contract worth $4.5 Million to ViaSat (News - Alert), Inc. for its LinkWay (S2) modems. This project is been initiated by Department of Defense to further modernize its tactical communications infrastructure.

The DoD has been using LinkWay systems since 2003 as these modems are backward compatible with legacy LinkWay systems. The modems will replace LinkWay2100 series hardware, setting the stage for network-wide transitions to the LinkWay S2 system.

"In numerous at-the-halt and on-the-move network demonstrations, including the U.S. Army Network Integration Evaluation 12.1, LinkWayS2 has maintained its excellent latency and jitter performance in full mesh configurations at the industry's highest MF-TDMA throughput," said Bill Connelly, general manager of ViaSat Tactical SATCOM Networks.

The LinkWay updates offers forward looking capabilities and features, including DoD-approved TRANSEC, increased transmission throughput, and advanced modulation and Forward Error Correction using open standards-based Turbo coding. These innovative features enable the LinkWayS2 system for communications on-the-move (COTM).

ViaSat officials say that their full mesh LinkWay modem has also been designated a “Current Force Modem” as a key component of the Department of Defense push to accelerate the adoption of new technology to enable more modular, mobile forces.

LinkWay modems, the most widely used broadband full mesh IP satcom modem in the DoD, are interoperable with the current Army Joint Network Node (JNN) hubs and/or the Coalition Multi-National Network (CMN) deployments.

Based in Carlsbad, California, ViaSat has established a number of locations worldwide for customer service, network operations and technology development.

The company offers fixed and mobile satellite network services including Exede by ViaSat, which features ViaSat-1, the world's highest capacity satellite; service to more than 1,750 mobile platforms, including Yonder Ku-band mobile Internet; satellite broadband networking systems; and network-centric military communication systems and cyber security products for the U.S. and allied governments.
