Harris Corporation Receives Orders for New Falcon III RF-7800H High-Frequency Wideband Tactical Radio

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

The new Falcon III RF-7800H wideband manpack is based on a half-century of innovation from Harris Corporation (News - Alert) in high-frequency tactical communications. Offering expanded data capabilities to long-range, beyond-line-of-sight environments, it is a wideband HF tactical radio. By letting warfighters send and receive video clips, images, maps and other large data files over distances that extend into the thousands of kilometers, the radio will transform the battlefield.

Recently, the company received initial orders totaling $5.6 million for its newly introduced Falcon III RF-7800H high-frequency wideband manpack radio.

Operating on a single battery, the new RF-7800H is 20 percent smaller and lighter than previous HF manpacks. Facilitating easy upgrades to provide new features and address emerging requirements, it also provides a Software Communications Architecture-based operating environment. For beyond line-of-sight data communications, the RF-7800H provides the first highly reliable alternative to satellite communications.

When compared to conventional narrowband tactical communications environments, the wider bandwidth waveform in the RF-7800H offers more dependable communications. The RF-7800H offers continuous coverage in the 1.5 MHz to 60 MHz frequency band, and weighs just under four kilograms.

“These initial orders highlight the broad applications for the RF-7800H in a range of different tactical scenarios and operating requirements,’’ said Brendan O’Connell, president, International business unit, Harris RF Communications. “The RF-7800H lightens the soldier’s load while delivering streamlined command and control and a more informed force. In addition, this new HF radio, combined with Harris’ new RF-3590 Ruggedized Tablet, supports the use of current and future C4ISR multimedia apps for international and DoD customers alike.”

Recently, the company secured USD17m contract to provide helpdesk and sustainment support to the US Army Dental Command's Corporate Dental System, located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
