Garmin Picks Nokia's Global Transit and Pedestrian Content for Urban Guidance Function

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Nokia (News - Alert) has announced that its location and commerce business is supplying its global Transit and Pedestrian Content (TaP) for Garmin's (News - Alert) new Urban Guidance function.

The Transit and Pedestrian Content allows the company to take a step beyond the car and provide a very effective and relevant solution for navigating cities, said Joern Watzke, vice president mobile phone business at Garmin Wuerzburg.

Noting that people in cities lead very busy lives and need to find the best way to get where they are going whether driving, walking or taking the bus, Watzke said that using this original, high quality content, “can offer our consumers the best possible urban routing experience.”

The addition of Nokia’s feature to NAVIGON and Garmin branded navigation apps is expected to provide consumers a choice of generating directions for driving, walking and also for public transport.

TaP is pedestrian centric and features elements such as walkways, bridges, tunnels, crossings, passages and stairs. In addition to enabling orientation and navigation on foot and via public transport, it also powers pedestrian routing across squares, parks and other open spaces.

Nokia’s offering is available in around 400 locations around the world and it supports a full range of functionality. Company officials said that it’s optimized for delivery across a variety of mobile platforms.

Initially, Urban Guidance is expected to be available via In App Purchase for these smartphones: NAVIGON for iOS, NAVIGON for Android (News - Alert) and also Garmin StreetPilot Onboard for iPhone.

“With Transit and Pedestrian Content at its heart, Urban Guidance represents real added value for the consumer whether driving or walking and using public transport,” said Bruno Bourguet, senior vice president of sales and business development for Location & Commerce at Nokia.

Recently, Nokia announced that its location and commerce business is supplying modified pan-European reference data to the Ford Motor Company (News - Alert).
