Mercedes Picks Nokia's NAVTEQ Maps and Content to Enable A-Class Range's Navigation Systems

Nokia (News - Alert) has announced that its Location & Commerce business is supplying global NAVTEQ Maps and content to Mercedes to enable navigation systems in the full A-Class range.

A product offering of Nokia’s Location & Commerce business, NAVTEQ (News - Alert) Maps enables navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the globe. NAVTEQ Maps and location content powers automotive navigation systems, portable and wireless devices, Internet-based mapping applications and government and business solutions.

With NAVTEQ Maps and content, A-Class drivers can experience a variety of additional new features including visual 3D imagery, traffic data, driver alerts and speed limits, according to company officials.

Company officials said drivers can navigate through unfamiliar cities using visual content such as 3D City Models and 3D Landmarks, leveraging features such as Extended Lanes. These features guide drivers to the correct lane at complex junctions.

Moreover, drivers of Mercedes can select from three different systems – a premium high-end model, an entry-level navigation, and a mobile version. These three models are powered by the NAVTEQ Map data used over 100 million times a day in a wide variety of devices, services and apps around the world.

Company officials said NAVTEQ Map data is the content heart of the Nokia Location Platform, access to which is enabled through a set of powerful client-side APIs and REST services.

Nokia Location & Commerce demonstrates its location and leadership in the global automotive space via numerous OEM collaborations. The supply of NAVTEQ Maps and content to Mercedes is yet another indication of “our reputation and leadership in the automotive sector where we offer a core solution to many leading brands,” said Bruno Bourguet, senior vice president of sales and business development for Location & Commerce at Nokia.

Recently, Oracle (News - Alert) selected Nokia’s location platform to offer a simple, built-in link between Oracle Fusion Middleware MapViewer and the Nokia Location Platform (NLP).
