Extending its 25-year relationship with Luxembourg-based SES (News - Alert), Boeing has entered into a new agreement to provide a new satellite. According to Boeing, the satellite will allow SES to improve its market position in areas such as Northeast Asia, South Asia and Indonesia.
With this new, Ku-band 702 High Power (HP) satellite, SES can now provide direct-to-home broadcasting and other modern communication services to its customers. The company will also build SES-9 n Boeing's (News - Alert) El Segundo Satellite Development Center.
SES offers satellite communications services to content and Internet service providers, broadcasters, business and governmental organizations and mobile and fixed network operators all over the world. With a 12.7-kilowatt payload and 57 high-power Ku-band transponders, the new SES-9 satellite is expected operate for 15 years.
In addition to expanding national HDTV broadcasting, the 702 High Power (HP) satellite will allow SES to broadcast local HDTV to numerous viewers in Northeast Asia, South Asia and Indonesia.
“We are pleased to be selected by SES to build a highly flexible 702HP satellite, which has a uniquely configured xenon ion propulsion system and chemical bi-propellant system, reducing the spacecraft's launch weight while allowing for maximum payload capacity," said Craig Cooning, CEO at Boeing Satellite Systems International and vice president and general manager of Boeing Space & Intelligence Systems. "Boeing has continuously evolved the 702 design since it was introduced over 15 years ago, allowing us to provide SES a satellite.”
To allow defense and Intelligence Community customers to better safeguard U.S. and allied citizens and assets around the world, the company recently upgraded its DataMaster geospatial data management software with improved map, terrain and full-motion video management. Apart from supporting faster video processing and analysis, DataMaster 5.2 also supports emerging industry-standard image formats.
