U.S. Army Selects ViaSat as One of 20 Prime Contractors

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

ViaSat (News - Alert) is a company that assists tactical warfighters and first responders in accessing and sharing trusted information to make better decisions fast. Defense and homeland security organizations depend on ViaSat for Satcom products and features at many frequency bands.

Recently, the U.S. Army appointed ViaSat Inc. as one of 20 prime contractors that will compete to provide systems to cater to the rapidly developing communication needs for military units and disaster response teams.

The company’s Mobile Satcom systems make use of ViaSat ArcLight technology to offer inexpensive, two-way, always-on, broadband access via satellite. This is provided at speeds that match cable or DSL to ground, airborne, and maritime platforms while in motion.

ViaSat will look to supply tactical command, control and communications (C3) system hardware, software, engineering, logistics, development, test, and system related support under the Global Tactical Advanced Communications Systems (News - Alert) (GTACS) program. According to the company, this program is valued at up to $10 billion.

Tactical C3 needs are changing so quickly that there is a need to change to a more responsive acquisition system that reduces unnecessary repetitive administrative functions.

“We're looking forward to supporting the mission and objectives of the U.S. Army with our advanced communication systems," said Bill Connelly, general manager of ViaSat Tactical Satellite Networks. "We have a history of competing very well under these types of procurement contracts because of the new ideas, innovative designs, and cost savings we can deliver.”

Recently, the company won Lot 13 orders, which are valued at $33.9 million for Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Low Volume Terminals (MIDS-LVT) for the U.S. Government and Turkey. According to the company, these orders provided a competitive procurement with the help of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). These orders were awarded under the MIDS Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract initially executed in March 2010.
