Sea Launch Makes Arrangements for EUTELSAT 70B Launch

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Sea Launch has been organizing the commencement of the EUTELSAT 70B satellite for Eutelsat (News - Alert). As part of the preparation, vessels of Sea Launch have left Sea Launch Home Port in Long Beach, Calif. for the equator.

This is the 34th mission for the Sea Launch vessels; a 54-minute launch window starting 12:43:55 PST on Sunday, December 2, 2012 has been provided. The EUTELSAT 70B satellite will be launched tentatively at the start of this window.

The Sea Launch vessels will reach the launch site located at 154 degrees West longitude. A 72-hour countdown will be initiated by the Sea Launch team, which will initially ensure the launch platform Odyssey is at accurate launch depth. A Zenit-3SL rocket will then be rolled-out and raised on the launch pad by the team.

The team will also carry out final tests before moving ahead with fueling operations and launch.

All employees on the launch platform will be shifted to the Sea Launch Commander for the entire period of the mission before fueling. Marine and launch operations will be tracked by the team from a ship, which will be placed nearly four miles away from the platform.

The 11,574-pound EUTELAT 70B spacecraft will be lifted by the Zenit-3SL vehicle on the launch day. The spacecraft will be transferred into a definite high-perigee geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The Astrium Eurostar E-3000 platform is used to develop the EUTELSAT 70B satellite, designed to stay in the orbit for more than 15 years. The EUTELSAT 70B satellite, with a 48- Ku-band transponder payload, will substitute the EUTELSAT 70A craft. Eutelsat's assets at its 70.5 degrees East longitude location will therefore be increased by 100 percent, offering finest communications services for users in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Sea Launch AG, based in Bern, Switzerland, offers launch solutions based on the Zenit launch system to the satellite operator community. Some of the services provided by Sea Launch include the provisioning of comprehensive launch services integrating schedule assurance, financing, risk management, and insurance and creative contracting.

Launch platform Odyssey and the Sea Launch Commander vessels are owned and supervised by Sea Launch.
