RFS's New SB6-W60B Microwave Antennas Withstand Greater Operational Wind Speeds

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

The commercial availability of sturdy 6 GHz Category A microwave antennas in the compact segment is limited. Even if available, they can’t withstand higher operational wind speeds and do not provide required radiation pattern, thereby hindering the performance.

And telecom operators and tower owners worldwide are seeking to deploy sturdy microwave antennas that are compact in size, as all antennas exert considerable forces on the tower that consequently leads to higher maintenance costs.

Catering to all these needs, Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) – a provider of wireless and broadcast infrastructure – debuted the 6 GHz Category A SB6-W60B microwave antennas that are light-weight, durable and can withstand greater operational wind speeds within a more compact design, while offering more reliable frequency coordination and more frequent reuse.

As a new addition to the company’s CompactLine series of microwave antennas, the SB6-W60B features a wind tunnel tested design suitable for both tight urban locations and rugged outposts.

The wind tunnel testing ensures it can withstand and remain operational even under the extreme conditions of coastline and mountaintop environments.

Optimized for direct mount applications, the new SB6-W60B is ideal for a wide range of end-users, including telecom operators, government agencies and enterprise customers.

Available in both basic and high-speed configurations, the new 6 GHz Category A microwave antennas feature a modular design that facilitates additional required capacity without the cost of replacing the antenna.

The basic configuration of SB6-W60B is capable of operating in 200 km/h (125 mph) wind speeds, while the high-speed configuration is able to function in speeds up to 250 km/h (155 mph).

According to RFS, the all-conditions capability of the SB6-W60B is due to its robust mounting system, a low-profile yet durable design with simplified mounting requirements that collectively reduce transportation requirements, wind load and antenna weight, while reducing installation time.

Also available in single and dual-polarized models with the option to upgrade from single to dual polarization and change frequencies in the field, the SB6-W60B covers the full 6 GHz frequency band of 5.925 GHz to 7.125 GHz.

Asad Zoberi, area product manager of microwave antenna systems at RFS, said in a statement, "The launch of the SB6-W60B line of microwave antennas offers telecom operators and tower owners an innovative solution for challenging tower sites and achieving new levels of performance thanks to its innovative mechanical design and superior radiation pattern."

"It will allow telecom operators to reduce their CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert) while protecting the core assets of tower owners,” Zoberi added. “Additionally, as one of the sturdiest 6 GHz Category A microwave antennas available in the Compact segment, the SB6-W60B excels in harsh climates with extreme wind speeds while maintaining a compact size designed to reduce costs and streamline installation."

In other recent news, RFS along with InfoGLOBAL – a provider of advanced telecommunications, control, video surveillance and security systems – introduced a worldwide unique solution for in-tunnel broadband wireless communication systems in the 5 to 6 GHz frequency band.
