Comtech Systems Bags $2.7M US Marine Corps Contract

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Comtech Systems, a subsidiary of Comtech Telecommunications (News - Alert) Corp. and a company known for its digital troposcatter systems for over-the-horizon radio communication links, has been awarded a $2.7-million order from the U.S. Marine Corps to support the upgrading of Marine Cop’s AN/TRC-170 troposcatter terminals.

It’s not always possible to depend on satellite communications in areas of conflict. The Marine Corps was on the lookout for an effective alternative communications transmission medium that would help reduce its dependence on satellite communication systems.

The organization found this alternative in Comtech’s troposcatter modem technology.

Under the new contract, Comtech will provide the Marine Corps with modem upgrading kits for the upgrading of AN/TRC-170 troposcatter terminals. As a part of the project, Comtech's patented Turbo Product Code forward error correction technology will be incorporated into the AN/TRC-170 terminals to give it a capacity of 16 megabits per second.

According to a recent statement, Comtech’s modems are not only field-proven and specially designed for the battle-field environments; they also include automatic power control, allowing for lower transmitted power when communication channel conditions permit.

These help reduce the risk of unfriendly intercept and interference with other communications.

“We are extremely pleased by this award from the U.S. Marine Corps for additional modem upgrade kits. Once again our industry-leading and field-proven troposcatter modem technology was the key to success in receiving this important award,” president and CEO at Comtech Telecommunications Corp., Fred Kornberg (News - Alert), commented in a statement.

In other news Comtech Telecommunications announced that Comtech EF Data Corp., its subsidiary, has received a $1.2-million order for satellite modems and demodulators from a major systems integrator. The infrastructure equipment will reportedly be utilized by an international agency to support a global satellite-based network.
