Gulfsat Madagascar, O3b Join to Deliver High-Speed Connectivity Services in Madagascar

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Gulfsat Madagascar, a telecom service provider, has signed a long-term capacity deal with O3b Networks for the provisioning of satellite-delivered high-speed broadband and telephony services, covering the island nation of Madagascar.

O3b Networks builds a fiber-quality, satellite-based, global Internet backbone for telecommunications operators and Internet service providers (ISP) in emerging markets.

Damien de Lamberterie, general manager, Gulfsat Madagascar said, “Together with O3b Networks, Gulfsat is well positioned to deliver a wide range of broadband, voice and data transmission services with the speed and cost effectiveness of fiber and the high availability and resilience of satellite.”

“Gulfsat will leverage that winning combination across Madagascar, where consumers and businesses alike have been waiting for an affordable high-speed, low latency solution for years,” Lamberterie added.

Gulfsat provides triple play services in Madagascar under the brand name, Blueline. The O3b-Gulfsat alliance is expected to optimize Internet access for subscribers in Africa. Gulfsat Madagascar specializes in data transmission systems and networks while in network deployment and operations, delivering VSAT telephony and WiMAX (News - Alert) as well.

O3b’s Medium Earth Orbit satellite fleet will be leveraged by Gulfsat Madagascar to offer broadband solutions to residents and businesses in Madagascar. O3b-delivered connectivity ensures optimally low latencies of fewer than 150 milliseconds, while providing unlimited, affordable bandwidth.

Although the island of Madagascar is served by submarine fiber-optic cables, Gulfsat will be using the resiliency of O3b’s Ka-band satellite solutions to provide all services, said officials.

“O3b is proud to enable this leading African telecom provider to realize its vision of unleashing the full potential of the region through affordable high-speed broadband,” remarked Omar Trujillo, O3b Networks, VP Africa and Latam.

Recently, Gulfsat Madagascar, operating the Blueline triple-play service, selected DiViNetworks to expand its international IP capacity. Gulfsat follows Telecom Malagasy, Madagascar’s largest operator, which already uses DiViCloud.

DiViCloud generates additional capacity by combining unique technology for compacting data without any loss of information, with a global network of smart nodes.
