Sea Launch AG has announced that the company has launched the EUTELSAT-70B satellite from the Equator on the ocean-based Launch Platform Odyssey.
Sea Launch provides superior value, operational and cost advantages to launch satellites. The company’s marine operations decreases launch infrastructure, and reduces operational expenses. With an emphasis on high performance, streamlined integration and efficient operations, the company offers continued focus on customer satisfaction, mission assurance and evolutionary growth.
Positioned at 154 degrees West longitude in the Pacific Ocean, the Zenit-3SL rocket carrying the spacecraft lifted off at 12:43:59 Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Monday, December 3rd. After an hour and six minutes, the Block DM-SL upper stage, which was inserted in the satellite and weighed 5,210 kilograms, (11,485 lbs.) was on its way to a final orbital position at 70.5 degrees East longitude. This was built by Astrium, an EADS (News - Alert) company, into geosynchronous transfer orbit.
Kjell Karlsen, president of Sea Launch AG, congratulated Eutelsat and Astrium and stated, “We take great pride in having successfully delivered Eutelsat's (News - Alert) spacecraft accurately into its designated transfer orbit. Once again, the Zenit-3SL/B has proven itself as a reliable and accurate launch system with an overall launch success rate of 95 percent." Karlsen continued, "To our colleagues at the launch site and around the world – well done! Your dedication to perfection reflects the best of what Sea Launch represents.”
Recently, the company announced that it will offer backup launch services for AsiaSat. Utilizing the Sea Launch Zenit 3SL launch system, Sea Launch and AsiaSat have already entered into an option agreement covering launch services. For the introduction of a future AsiaSat satellite on Sea Launch, the agreement offers an option which AsiaSat may exercise. Sea Launch will offer AsiaSat with a combined schedule assurance plan in support of AsiaSat's satellite installation plan.
