DPX Technology Utilized by Tektronix's Handheld Spectrum Analyzers

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Tektronix, Inc. has unveiled the H500 and SA2500 Handheld Spectrum (News - Alert) Analyzers. These Spectrum Analyzers comprise DPX waveform image processor technology, ensuring a real-time RF view of the spectrum.

The instruments have been incorporated with the innovative DPX technology, and embedded mapping and signal classification features – all in a compact, sturdy package. Spectrum regulators can now administer and track spectrum in the field and locate indefinable signals and interferers in a proficient manner using these instruments.

The rising usage of digital RF and wireless has made it hard to manage the spectrum. It is very hard to uncover transients and signals, which use transmission techniques that change with time to avoid recognition. DPX technology uses color-coding events depending on the rate of occurrence over thousands of spectrum captures each second.

DPX technology can therefore offer views into transients as short as 125 µs with complete prospect of cut off.

Compared to the traditional swept analysis techniques, a considerable enhancement is offered by DPX technology.

In a statement, Jim McGillivary, general manager, Source Analyzer Product Line at Tektronix (News - Alert) said, "The H500 and SA2500 combine benchtop spectrum analyzer performance with ruggedized packaging resulting in a powerful and versatile tool ideal for almost any spectrum management assignment. But what makes these instruments truly revolutionary is our unique real-time DPX live RF spectrum display technology. No other instrument or technology offers such a practical, fast and easy way to discover unknown, randomly occurring digital RF events."

The performance of numerous benchtop spectrum analyzers is matched by the H500 and SA2500 with 10 kHz-6.2 GHz frequency exposure, 20 MHz real-time bandwidth and -163 dBm (News - Alert) Displayed Average Noise Level (DANL). Relative to any traditional spectrum analyzer, the H500 and SA2500 feature a spectrum processing rate that is 100 times faster, thereby offering a reliable prospect of interrupt for transients with the smallest event periods of 125 µs on the H500 and 500 µs on the SA2500.

The H500 and SA2500 weigh around 12 pounds, have a battery life of five hours for continuous spectrum scanning, and are completely ruggedized to endure shock and moisture.

The SA2500 and H500 have been priced at $24,600 and $43,400, respectively.
