Globalstar Ready for February Launch of Second-Generation Satellites

By Frank Griffin, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Satellite communications is an essential part of a complete communications solution for organizations that rely on 100 percent uptime for their business. In the past, this option was only limited to large organizations, but companies such as Globalstar (News - Alert) have made commercial voice and data services using satellites an affordable and necessary solution.

The deployment will make the company the first mobile satellite provider to have a second-generation low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites.

The six satellites are currently in Kazakhstan awaiting the February launch. The satellites were manufactured at the Thales (News - Alert) facility in Rome with final completion and delivery at the launch site on December 9.

The satellites will be put into orbit using the Russian-made Soyuz launch vehicle.

Once they’re deployed, the company will be able to provide an array of services with an affordable and reliable mobile satellite around the world.

"After more than six years of design and development, we are proud to announce that Globalstar is on the threshold of completing the deployment of our new constellation. This successful delivery signals the achievement of one of the last key milestones for our fourth launch and restoration of Globalstar's industry leading service quality," said Jay Monroe, Chairman and CEO for Globalstar, Inc.

Globalstar provides satellite services for commercial and personal use in more than 120 countries around the world. It provides flexible service packages with mobile and fixed satellite phones and simplex and duplex satellite data modems. Industries that rely on communications in remote locations without cellular and landline services are the biggest customer segment of the company.

Maritime companies, gas and oil, mining, forestry, military, transportation and emergency services are just some of the applications for satellite communications the company provides.

Personal applications for satellite services include phone services, tracking and data monitoring. As the price of satellite communication becomes more affordable, more companies will offer services for everyone around the world – especially in areas with minimal development and infrastructure.
