Piaggio Aero Industries Selects Saab

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

In an exciting reveal, Saab has unveiled its plans to enter into a framework agreement with Italian Piaggio Aero Industries. According to the agreement, Saab gets an order to combine surveillance systems in Piaggio Aero's new surveillance aircraft.

A surveillance aircraft collects information over a period of time, and these aircrafts are usually operated by military forces or other government agencies. Usually, surveillance aircraft do not carry any arms, but sometimes they may carry limited defensive armament.

Offering the ability to be used for airborne patrols over land and sea, the new aircraft – Piaggio Aero MPA (Multirole Patrol Aircraft) – is a multi-functional aircraft. Saab will deliver two MPA aircrafts, bringing together a package of state of the art surveillance equipment such as radar, sensors, infra-red cameras and a mission system.

Saab provides numerous solutions that support air transportation companies in enhancing and safeguarding the different sectors comprising air transportation, including airport support, traffic management, security and solutions offering net centric features.

“Saab has many years experience of integrating surveillance systems on its own platforms and others, and on different types of aircraft,” explained Lars-Erik Wige, head of Business Area Support and Services at Saab. “This order proves Saab's ability to deliver market-leading and high-performing surveillance systems in a very short time, whist being competitively priced at a level that suits the market.”

Recently, the company also revealed that it won two new contracts from the Swedish Defense Material Administration. The company had a total value of MSEK 194 for these contracts. Along with support for underwater weapon systems, the contracts include an upgrade of its heavyweight torpedo Torpedo 62. Offering an important capability improvement to the system, the upgrade of Torpedo 62 includes new and enhanced functions which assist in communication and warhead initiation.
