u-blox Utilizes BeiDou Satellite System for Showcasing Navigation

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System has been used by u-blox (News - Alert) for positioning its satellite. With the assistance of live BeiDou satellite signals, the GNSS, or Global Navigation Satellite System, platform from u-blox has locked itself in position.

u-blox has already showcased its compatibility with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS. With the latest compatibility with BeiDou, u-blox is one of the initial GNSS component vendors compatible with all globally deployed positioning systems. By the first quarter of 2013, the organization expects to begin the showcase of technology for its customers.

In a statement, Thomas Seiler, CEO, u-blox said, "As the technology leader in global positioning electronics, we are thrilled to have achieved this milestone only 3 weeks after the BeiDou specification was published. China will become the world's most important single market for devices relying on embedded satellite navigation, and u-blox plans to be a major player in this market."

Users in China and Southeast Asia are offered navigation and positioning services by BeiDou-2 or Compass (News - Alert), which already has 15 satellites in orbit. Global positioning capability will be offered by BeiDou over its open service with a preciseness of maximum 10 meters. In the future, 35 satellites will be a part of BeiDou-2.

u-blox is a major provider of GPS/GNSS and wireless semiconductors. u-blox offers positioning and wireless semiconductors ideal for the consumer, industrial and automotive markets. People, vehicles and machines are able to identify their precise position using u-blox offerings. They are also able to communicate their position wirelessly with the help of voice, text or video. u-blox offers a wide range of chips, modules and software offerings. These offerings assist OEMs in building ground-breaking personal, professional and M2M solutions in a rapid and economical manner. The organization has its headquarters in Thalwil, Switzerland. The organization also has offices across Europe, Asia and the USA.

China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System has been autonomously developed. BeiDou comprises of three parts: the space section, the ground section and the user section.
