Hughes (News - Alert) Network Systems is continuing to support the recovery efforts of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, NY with its satellite broadband Internet and voice services post Superstorm Sandy. The robust communications support is a critical element in the successful rebuilding of more 110 homes in Breezy Point, NY that bore the brunt of the Sandy. Hughes, Cisco (News - Alert) Systems, and the Global VSAT Forum collaborated over ensuring reliability of communications support to Habitat for Humanity.
In a statement, Jim Killoran, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, said that, "The combined assistance from Cisco Systems, the Global VSAT Forum (News - Alert) and Hughes was invaluable, and to this day Hughes and Cisco are supporting our disaster operations in this devastated area. This support has been critical to our success in helping to alleviate suffering and get families closer to being in their homes."
After the devastation brought upon by Superstorm Sandy on Breezy Point, Habitat for Humanity has been tireless in its efforts to help residents rebuild their homes. They have helped numerous residents by setting up a command center, which has served to optimize recovery efforts. After the hurricane hit the area, flooding and power outages had decimated the base stations, towers, and switching centers of terrestrial network providers. The Hughes satellite network, however, was able to withstand the hurricane’s impact and any disruption to service was only temporary.
Cisco quickly set up a TacOps team on site to provide customers with a switch to help them connect their computers, and also provided them with Wi-Fi for wireless access and a call manager for their phones.
Tim Woods, Technical Support Manager - TacOps at Cisco, said that, "Cisco's TacOps teams are deployed to support communications in the acute phase of emergencies, such as in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. It has been a pleasure to work side by side with the Habitat for Humanity team, providing vital communications to both staff and volunteers."
Hughes Network Systems (News - Alert) has been providing homes and offices with robust satellite broadband services. The company delivers advanced network technologies, managed services, and solutions for enterprise and government customers across the globe.
