MTN Expands Channel Offerings for More Programming at Sea

By Colleen Lynch, TMCnet Contributor

MTN (News - Alert) Satellite Communications is expanding its MTN Worldwide TV service with the addition of three new live channels, and a host of foreign language programming for the maritime community to enjoy. Shows in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish will now be offered by the service, as the company aims to meet the demand of the cruise and yacht community, as well as commercial and government markets.

“The demand for additional content is a testament to the value MTN TV brings to the maritime market for both passengers and crew,” said Bill Witiak, MTN’s director of television and broadcast services. “MTN can appreciate that the demand for broadcast services is akin to the at-home TV experience but, more importantly, for the consistent delivery and 24/7 service.”

Witiak explains that the newly added channels and programs will include the broadcast of special sporting events, which will “give operators another reason to gather groups out at sea, and we give them the confidence that the broadcast will reach the ship.”

Managing partner of Across Oceans Group Inc. Brian Lunsford is pleased with MTN’s added offerings, and believes the expansion is necessary for the company to meet demand in the changing maritime market.

“The goal of cruise lines used to be getting passengers out of their cabins, but these days ‘connection’ to the world, even on vacation, is becoming more and more important to passengers and crew, including viewing their country’s sports and news for morale purposes,” said Lunsford.

This is important, as three-year-old MTN is the only live, worldwide maritime television service out there today.

Giving passengers and crew access to events such as the Superbowl, the Olympics and the World Cup is a move that just makes sense in today’s constant-connected world, says Lunsford.

“This is an important investment for the operator. Managing TV content like this used to be virtually impossible and a full time job, but what MTN has done is deliver a solution from a single source with the right expanding line-up and rights to add an important benefit as part of the cruising experience. Once again, MTN broke a cruise industry mold by delivering more than just news through MTN TV--an mirroring the TV experience a passenger or crew member would have on land.”

MTN TV broadcasts 11 channels of news, sports, entertainment and special events, and now the programming includes channels like Prime U.S., Prime Telly, Engage! and Sport 24.
