FCC: Exede Satellite Best at Delivering Advertised Speeds

By Jody Ray Bennett, TMCnet Contributing Writer

ViaSat (News - Alert), Inc.’s Exede Satellite Internet service has become the first satellite provider to be included in the annual Federal Communications Commission report of broadband speeds, coming out as the best at delivering advertised speeds, ViaSat reported in a statement.

The FCC’s (News - Alert) “2013 Measuring Broadband America: A Report on Consumer Wireline Performance in the U.S.” is a nationwide study of American residential broadband performance, comparing what is promised by Internet service providers and what is actually delivered. The study entails collaboration between the FCC, SamKnows and ISPs that cover 80 percent of the residential market.

DSL, cable, fiber and satellite Internet were all analyzed for the study, with 14 ISPs represented.

“In our testing, we found that during peak periods 90 percent of ViaSat consumers received 140 percent or better of the advertised speed of 12 Mbps (download speeds),” the FCC report said. “In addition, there was very little difference between peak and nonpeak performance.”

“Our goal has always been to give our Exede customers the most consistent broadband experience, and it’s good to have objective data showing we delivered on our promise to deliver great speeds,” said Mark Dankberg (News - Alert), ViaSat CEO and chairman. “It’s especially important to us that the data was collected from Exede subscribers and the FCC offered us the opportunity to be ranked side by side against DSL and cable services.”

On average, Exede Internet reportedly delivered 161 percent of its advertised upload speeds. Fiber ISPs gave, on average, 108 percent. DSL gave 99 percent.

Exede also had the least amount of variation based on the time of day, giving 130 percent and above its advertised speeds. Exede was the only satellite Internet provider included in the report.

Exede by ViaStat accesses the Internet through ViaStat-1, the world’s highest capacity satellite.
