Spirent (News - Alert) Communications, a provider of navigation, positioning and wireless testing utilities, just announced that the European Space Agency (ESA) has chosen to use Spirent's own Hybrid Location Technology Solution (HLTS) to enhance location testing operations within its research and development labs.
Spirent's HLTS is the first solution that gives its users access to every single component of hybrid positioning technology simultaneously. It will allow the ESA to test its positioning systems by combining Assisted Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GNSS), Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensor, and terrestrial cellular positioning technologies.
The ESA will primarily be using HLTS to test the observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA), which is a cellular function used to accurately gather the positioning of objects in indoor environments. HLTS will let the ESA test its OTDOA performance within its labs and realize what accuracy this technology has, when placed under different situations – such as variable PRS bandwidth, muting patterns, and multipath and fading issues.
Massimo Crisci, head of radio navigations systems and techniques section of the technical directorate in the ESA, said, "Spirent navigation and positioning systems have been a big part of our R&D efforts over the years. HLTS is a unique and powerful test platform that delivers repeatable and reliable lab-based testing while combining the key positioning technologies."
