TUBITAK UEKAE Deploys Spectrum's SDR-4000

Spectrum Signal Processing, a group of Vecima Networks Inc (News - Alert). and a provider of advanced custom radio solutions, announced recently that its flexComm SDR-4000 transceiver platform has been chosen by the National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), an affiliate of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), for the development and deployment of tactical radio waveforms.


"TUBITAK's selection of Spectrum's (News - Alert) SDR-4000 reaffirms our strategy to become leaders in connecting the complex world of communications, video, and satellite," said Douglas Fast, president of Spectrum, in a release.

"This win complements our announcements in the areas of airborne, public safety, and satellite. Across commercial and defense markets, Spectrum's radio products allow our customers to manage their own waveform portfolios so they are not locked into to any single vendor and can ultimately lower their total cost of ownership," added Fast.

The SDR-4000 is a multi-purpose reconfigurable transceiver that supports a diverse array of waveforms including: Wideband Networking Waveform - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing mode (WNW OFDM), Soldier Radio Waveform - Electronic Warfare mode (SRW EW), Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS), Future Multiband Multiwaveform Modular Tactical Radio (FM3TR), APCO Project (P25)

Reportedly, TUBITAK UEKAE will also port two different waveforms to the SDR-4000 for demonstration to the Turkish Ministry of Defense: an implementation of STANAG 4285 for high frequency (HF) radio links and APCO Project 25 (P25) for public safety links.

"The SDR-4000 is ideal for rapid-prototyping, porting, and testing of our project waveforms because it includes all the hardware, firmware and software required and is representative of a small form factor tactical radio," said Ibrahim Olcer, chief researcher and project manager at TUBITAK.

"Selecting the SDR-4000 is a cost effective way for TUBITAK UEKAE to accomplishing our project phases, which include Software Communications Architecture (SCA)," said Olcer.

TUBITAK UEKAE is in the last phase of a project which will focus on building a universal test bed that can be used to develop and test SCA-compliant waveforms according to Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) requirements, and to execute SCA compliance test and verification on advanced software defined radios that can be supplied to the TAF.

Spectrum’s SDR-4000 product family is said to offer off-the-shelf hardware, software and services for development and deployment of black-side wireless modem solutions for Tactical Military Communications (MILCOM) systems.

The National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), an affiliate of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), produces and applies scientific and technological solutions in the areas of information security, communications and advanced electronics. UEKAE works on joint projects together with private sector companies and government authorities by utilizing the TEMPEST, Acoustics, Common Criteria and Cryptographic Algorithm Design and Test Centers and Product Development, Electronic Warfare, Microelectronics and Optoelectronics departments.
