TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

As usual, SIP communications specialist Sonus Networks (News - Alert) continues to generate interesting news in the session border controller (SBC) space. This past week, the company announced that its SBC 5000 series controllers have been tested and certified in Microsoft’s (News - Alert) Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program for Lync Server 2010. According to the supplier, SBC 5000 series includes the SBC 5100, which delivers 250 to 10,000 sessions, and the SBC 5200, which supports 64,000 sessions on a single server.

Sonus said that this certification gives enterprise customers and resellers the needed confidence that  SBC 5000 series products will interoperate with Microsoft's unified communications solutions featuring Lync Server 2010.  The TMCnet report quotes Microsoft’s Lync Group product manager Ashima Singhal, as saying, "The Sonus SBC 5000 series provides a great option for combining Microsoft Lync into a legacy IP telephony infrastructure and activating the full suite of Microsoft Lync voice communications capabilities.

Besides announcing certification for its SBCs, Sonus also provided communications network consultants with preferred access to product information, training and sales support. TMCnet contributor Anuradha Shukla reported that the global specialist in SIP communications has launched a new initiative called the Consultant Liaison Program (CLP). Through this program, the consulting community can help service provider customers make informed decisions through this program, wrote Shukla.

In other news, contributor Shukla reported that Tehuti Networks has selected Kilopass Technology’s XPM (eXtra Permanent Memory) NVM IP core for its latest TN4010 single port 10GbE Controller. According to Kilopass Technology, a supplier of logic non-volatile memory (NVM) IP, by storing configuration data, device and network IDs, XPM enables the TN4010 to consume less power and afford lower system cost than alternative solutions.

The report brings a quote from Kilopass Technology’s vice president of marketing and sales, Linh Hong, who said, “We are very excited to be part of the Tehuti TN4010 design that provides an order of magnitude boost in performance at very low power and cost levels." He added, “It demonstrates the ability of the anti-fuse 2T memory cell at the heart of all Kilopass NVM IP offerings to serve the most demanding network controller designs.”

Likewise, TMCnet contributor Robbie Pleasant reported that Begium’s broadband cable services provider Telenet selected Sonus SBC 5100 for its internal network as part of a new SIP trunking solution. It is designed to remove expensive PRI trunks, reduce phone charges, and make network management a simple task, according to Telenet, wrote Pleasant.

Lastly, TMCnet contributor Nathesh reported that for network expansion, New Zealand’s Vocus Communications has installed the Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platform and the Cyan 360 software-defined network (SDN) operations system at its newly built Auckland, NZ network. Vocus has indicated that it will use Cyan’s solutions for conducting multi-layer planning, management and performance verification over the new network that was built to offer superior services with more favorable economics, reported Nathesh.
