TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

This past week SIP communications specialist Sonus Networks once again reiterated the fact that its session border controller series SBC5000 has been successfully tested and certified in Microsoft’s (News - Alert) Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program for Lync Server 2010. As a result, both SBC5100 and SBC5200 series controllers are capable of enabling seamless transition to SIP trunking and are certified to work flawlessly with Microsoft’s unified communication solutions, reported TMCnet contributor Nathesh.

The certification gives enterprise customers and resellers the needed confidence that  SBC5000 series products will interoperate with Microsoft's unified communications solutions featuring Lync Server 2010, wrote Nathesh.  This report quotes Microsoft’s Lync Group product manager Ashima Singhal, as saying, “In particular, Sonus’ strengths in interworking allow enterprises to take advantage of their legacy voice applications infrastructure and use SBCs to enable a smooth migration to SIP trunking and help create a truly unified communications network centered on Microsoft Lync.”

Concurrently, Sonus Networks also launched a new initiative called Consultant Liaison Program (CLP) to give communications network consultants preferred access to Sonus product information, training and sales support. TMCnet contributor Anshu Shrivastava reported that the company’s CLP program allows consultants to access the Sonus knowledgebase, providing the information they need quickly, whether it is ROI analysis, RFI (News - Alert)/RFP completion or technical expertise. In essence, the CLP program gives the consulting community the answers that they need to help their enterprise and service provider customers make informed decisions as they build session initiation protocol (SIP)-based solutions, reported Shrivastava.

In other news, contributor Madhubanti Rudra reported that communications semiconductor supplier  Broadcom Corp. unveiled a new line of Ethernet switching solutions that promise to deliver more than 100 10GbE ports, a four time increase in network virtualization scale and a two time increase in forwarding and classification tables. The report indicates that the new StrataXGS Trident II series switches are designed to meet the bandwidth, scalability and efficiency demands of cloud networking environments and mega datacenters. As per the report, the solution has been designed to enable a significant return on investment on private and multitenant public cloud computing infrastructure connectivity.

Also, TMCnet contributing writer Rory Lidstone reported that Sonus Networks has successfully completed the acquisition of Network Equipment Technologies (News - Alert) (NET). Besides expanding the company’s portfolio of SBC controllers, the acquisition also greatly enhances its position in the cloud-based unified communications space, wrote Lidstone.

Likewise, TMCnet web editor Rich Steeves reported that with the acquisition of NET finally complete, the SBC specialist is one step closer to the goal of providing SBC controllers for enterprises of all sizes. Todd Abbott (News - Alert), senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Sonus, told TMC that the company had several reasons for acquiring NET, including the expansion of Sonus’ session border controller product line, a stronger integration with Microsoft Lync, and the ability to obtain government contracts, wrote Steeves.
