While the average American might not know what a session border controller is, for those of us in the know, it is important to keep up with the latest trends and news in the session border controller space. This week, there was plenty of news in the space, from announcements about the ITEXPO (News - Alert) trade show, to rumblings in the mergers and acquisitions arena, to some new and exciting releases.

First up is the new that Equinox Information Systems will be appearing at the ITEXPO West 2012 show in Austin, Texas. The Nashville-based company will be showcasing its business assurance solutions at the event, which is scheduled to run from October 2-5. “Our reputation in the telecommunication industry has stood the test of time because we continue to deliver reliable, affordable software systems that produce results in addition to providing customer support that goes beyond the call,” said David Ledbetter, Equinox’s national sales director. “We are committed to the success of our customers, including helping them protect their bottom line. We accomplish this task by providing industry-leading fraud management and revenue assurance tools, in the form of Protector and TeleLink.”

Also this week, Allot Communications (News - Alert) finalized its acquisition of Oversi Networks. Oversi is a provider of rich-media caching and content delivery systems for Internet video and peer-to-peer traffic. The acquisition, which was originally announced on July 31, 2012, helps Allot integrate a wide range of critical, value-added services into its Allot Service Gateway (News - Alert) solution. Allot will now be able to help operators implement comprehensive video strategies by caching with a variety of video services.

Finally this week, Tango Telecom released version 2.0 of its iAX SMS IP-SM Gateway for IP LTE (News - Alert)/IMS networks. This new edition includes improved capabilities for delivering message interworking support and ensuring messaging revenue as companies transition to IP LTE/IMS networks. “Text based messaging remains hugely popular and a very significant revenue earner for operators worldwide,” said Kieran Kelly, CTO of Tango Telecom (News - Alert). “Messaging revenues are predicted to continue growing for the next several years, despite the threat from diverse and incompatible OTT services. In fact, SMS is emerging as the single de-facto standard for interoperability and communication with legacy handsets and applications. It is critical to the rapid ramp up and success of LTE that early adopters can still avail of the existing mass market communications on newer devices. ”
