Companies that take advantage of VoIP or unified communications technology know the importance of a session border controller. For those businesses, it’s important to keep abreast of the big news in the session border controller space, and there was certainly a lot of it this week!

First up, the CallPlus Group has deployed Acme Packet’s Net-Net Session Director session border controller in order to protect and control the access and interconnect borders of its VoIP network. “Acme Packet's (News - Alert) market leading SBCs help CallPlus Group deliver high-quality and cost-effective VoIP services to both our residential and commercial customers,” said Adrian Dick, chief technology officer for CallPlus Group. “As CallPlus Group continues to rapidly expand, Acme Packet's highly scalable solution ensures a solid foundation for future growth, as well as innovative new services."

Also this week, several companies joined the Open Visual Communications Consortium, bringing that group’s total membership to 32 companies. The new members are: IntelePeer, Neustar, Swisscom, ZTE (News - Alert) and Sonus Networks. “The OVCC consortium is excited to announce five new members this month. This means we have more than tripled our membership in our first 12 months,” said Andrew McFadzen, president of OVCC. “We are represented by industry-leading companies on five continents offering services that span the globe. OVCC members have announced that the first wave of OVCC compliant services will launch in 2012. Each new member brings the organization – and our members’ customers around the world – closer to making video conference calls as easily as they make phone calls.”

In other news from Sonus Networks (News - Alert), the session border controller company has been touting the newest additions to its product line. This includes the SBC 1000, which was formerly part of the UX line from Network Equipment Technologies. After Sonus’ acquisition of NET, the company now boasts a comprehensive line of session border controllers to serve all customers from small businesses to large enterprises. The SBC 1000 is especially well suited for small and medium businesses.

Sonus is also taking part in an upcoming webinar that will explain the relationship between session border controllers and Microsoft Lync. The webinar will explain the role of the SBC in the enterprise, what companies should look for in an SBC and the integration of SBCs with Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync.

All told, it’s been a pretty exciting week in the session border controller space. Check back soon to see more news and highlights!

Sonus Networks is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event.
