TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

While Hurricane Sandy ravaged much of the northeastern United States this week, the communications and technology world marched on, and there was plenty of news to report. In the session border controller space, we heard announcements about the fast-growing market and revelations about new products from Sonus. Let’s take a quick look at some of the news highlights for this week.

First, Infonetics Research published a report that discussed the enterprise session border controller market. It examined the current state of the market and made projections for the future. It cited Cisco as a leader in the space, as well as listing Acme Packet (News - Alert) as a company to watch in the near future. But moreover, the report spoke about a robust future for the space in general, figuring that session border controller revenue would top $430 million by 2016, which means there will be plenty of room for different players to carve out their niches in the space in the next several years.

Another major player in the session border controller space made some news this week when Sonus Networks (News - Alert) revealed plans to roll out two new additions to its SBC line: the SBC 1000 and the SBC 2000. The two new products are well suited for small and medium-sized businesses and boast thorough integration with Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync. They can handle intrabranch voice calls and IM sessions as well as dealing with communications between branches via the PSTN.

They can deal with virtual local area support duties and SIP message manipulation as well.
