TMCnet's Session Border Controller Week in Review

SBC, also known as session border controller, is a commonly used device or software that creates sessions to control how people communicate over the VoIP network. SBC is often installed in a path between two parts of a network and can control everything from signaling to security. Recently, SBC has begun being used by service providers to connect their access network to the network provided to its customers.

SBC has been a topic of discussion this week, as Raymond P. Dolan, president and CEO at Sonus Networks (News - Alert) discussed the similarities between Unified Communications and Mobile Communications during his keynote speech at the ITEXPO (News - Alert) Austin Event this past October.

“During his speech at the TMC event, Dolan – a former leader at mobile companies including Bell Atlantic/NYNEX Mobile, PacTel Cellular and QUALCOMM laid out the 20-year journey of mobile data devices, discussing the evolution from pagers to the iPhone (News - Alert),” said Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, TMC. “Referencing the mobile industry’s transition from figuring out how to address protocol-related issues to deciding how to allow for interoperability and simplicity, and just generally understanding industry barriers to widespread adoption, Dolan commented: “Does that sound familiar to us in the UC space? You bet.”

Dolan said that SBC would be a catalyst for moving forward.

Another hot discussion this week was the creation of mobile apps for businesses. Many companies are looking into social media, online advertisement, and ways to become more mobile with its customers. As portable technology becomes bigger and bigger, many companies are focusing on the mobile world, in hopes of making a successful application.

“Naturally, a successful mobile application launch takes a lot. It requires extensive planning beforehand, it takes a careful release strategy to capitalize on that planning, and ultimately, it requires regular vigilance following the launch to ensure that the best results are behind had from the launch itself,” said TMCnet contributing writer, Steve Anderson.

“A lot of companies are launching mobile applications with an eye towards improving productivity, and it’s turning out that consumer mobile technology is actually outpacing traditional enterprise IT. That’s leaving plenty of businesses looking to take advantage of that wider mobile technology for themselves.”
