TMCnet Session Border Controller Week in Review

2013 is finally kicking into high gear, and that means that there’s a wealth of communications and technology news out there. One space that had a lot of news this week was the session border controller space. Let’s check out some of the highlights of the past few days.

First up, GLC Communications came out with a new channel associated signaling protocol emulator. This device gives a channel carrying speech addressing and signaling options that can be used to set up and take down calls.

“This form of signaling is still used to route calls on the public switched telephone network (PSTN) including subscriber lines like 2wire local loops, on trunks between central offices (CO), and on access trunks such as PBXs,” the company said in the statement. “Typical CAS signaling methods are: Loop Start, R1, MFC-R2, SS5, and other variants of these methods.”

Also this week, the city of Taylor, Michigan reached a deal with Avaya (News - Alert) to integrate that company’s network and communications solutions throughout the metropolis. The city has faced infrastructure and budget cuts, forcing it to make tough decisions about communications.

Taylor plans to create a central phone number for citizens to access all city services, and the Avaya technology will route the various calls to appropriate departments.

Finally this week, Fremont, California-based broadband semiconductor and software company Ikanos (News - Alert) debuted its new chip. The Fusiv Vx185-HP is designed for home gateways and intended to help Ikanos improve its position in the triple play network space.

“Since the launch of the Fusiv Vx185 family of processors, Ikanos has been fortunate to anticipate the need for speed resulting from multiple, bandwidth-hungry applications running concurrently in the home," said Omid Tahernia, president and CEO at Ikanos. "With our new Vx185-HP, we intend to continue outdistancing other broadband chipset suppliers. Furthermore, we see the adoption of our Vx185 family of processors as evidence that the only innovations that take hold in fast-moving markets are those that materialize as products almost as quickly as they are envisioned."

There you have it! It was certainly an interesting week in the session border controller space. Be sure to check back early and often to see the latest news and information!
