TMCnet SIP Phones Week in Review

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

So it was a busy week in SIP phones – what else is new? Here’s a roundup of some of the top news for the week.

TMC’s (News - Alert) Carrie Schmelkin reported that Panasonic (News - Alert), a SIP phones company that is recognized as the No. 1 choice for small business phone systems according to company officials, has additional bragging rights – its SIP UT Series was named Best-of-Show in the Open Source (News - Alert) Category at ITEXPO West 2011.

Out of dozens of candidates, the editorial staff at TMC awarded Panasonic with the “Best-of-Show” award – an accolade that recognizes innovative products and solutions that were exhibited during the event. This top honor highlights outstanding products based on creative and technological innovations and how a product can contribute to the development of future communications products and services, according to Panasonic officials.

“As a leader in business telephone systems, we are thankful to be honored with a Best of Show award from ITEXPO West.  This award, backed by the editorial staff at TMC, truly validates our new UT series phones for the open source category,” said Bill Taylor, president, Panasonic System Networks Company of America.

“Our business customers are constantly looking for communication solutions that are reliable, flexible and affordable.  Panasonic listens to our customer’s desires and we make it a goal to provide them with the best telephony solutions available to fit their business needs.”

Peter Bernstein wrote that TMCnet’s recent webinar “The Benefits of SIP Communications for Small and Medium Businesses in the Pure IP - Open Source Environment,” featuring Steven L. Greiwe, Panasonic ASM (News - Alert) Eastern Region, explored how the powerful combination of SIP with Open Source communications and collaboration options is changing the landscape in the small to medium business (SMB) markets and creating sustainable competitive advantage.

Highlighted in a fast-paced, insight-packed session were:

  • SIP and Open Source – how they work
  • Advantages of an Open Source approach
  • Evaluating if SIP and Open Source are right for your business or organization
  • Get starting with SIP-based Open Source.

Greiwe started with a provocative statement: “SIP communications via Open Source combines the technological innovations of application hardware and the power of the network to enable advanced capabilities that improve efficiency and reduce cost for tens of thousands of SMBs around the world…without the need to purchase expensive vendor products, services, and licenses own a communications platform. The intelligence of the platform is designed by you and supported by many for free.”

Also this past week, TMC’s Rajani Baburajan noted that Panasonic System Networks Company of America announced that it has been again positioned as global PBX (News - Alert) market leader, according to a recent MZA report, “The WorldPBX /IP PBX Market Competitive Environment 2011.”

The company leads the Corded PBX/IP PBX market for the full calendar year of 2010, according technology and market research firm MZA. Panasonic was named the leader among manufacturers of Corded PBX/IP PBX in the below-100 extensions market (excluding Micro PBX systems) measured by volume of extensions sold.

Additionally, Panasonic’s market share grew one point to 15 percent over 2009. The company enjoyed a two point lead when compared to the next most significant vendor, the report from MZA said. “Panasonic is pleased to once again be recognized for leading the global market in Corded PBX/IP PBX systems, under-100 extension category,” said Bill Taylor, president, Panasonic System Networks Company of America.

“We strive to create innovative communications solutions for our customers in the small business market and we are eager to continue to advance and set the bar for this industry.”
