TMCnet SIP Phones Week in Review

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

This week in the SIP phones sector was busy as usual with new device compatibility, significant software updates and one product of the year award. Let's get to it!

Panasonic's SIP Cordless Phone Systems, meant for both home office and business use, are now compatible with IPsmarx (News - Alert) Technology's hosted telephony platform. Specifically, both the KX-TGP500 and KX-TGP550 lines have been certified for use with IPsmarx Technology's Class 5 Softswitch & Multi-Tenant IP-PBX (News - Alert) Solution with integrated billing.

“Certification with Panasonic SIP endpoints furthers our mission to offer complete IP-PBX and billing solutions to VoIP service providers. Integration with our Auto-Provisioning feature also enables our clients to easily and affordably implement this line of Panasonic products without having to manually configure the phones,” said IPsmarx CEO Arash Vahidnia.

Zoiper, a provider of Internet telephony applications, launched the latest version of Zoiper Mobile this week, with one stand out feature. Available for iOS and Android (News - Alert), the latest version of Zoiper Mobile allows VoIP users to self provision their account settings by way of a specially generated QR code to retrieve account data.

Users can also access self provisioning with just a single tap, which switches the phone to QR scan mode and captures the image provided by the VoIP provider. The official company statement said that "this functionality enables implementing automated control over customer management of VoIP accounts.”

Compunetix (News - Alert) announced this week that its CONTEX Presenter Web-based group data collaboration tool won the 2011 Communications Solutions Product of the Year Award from TMC. The software allows users to merge desktop and application sharing and participate in chat while also offering remote desktop and application control.

“Compunetix was chosen to receive a 2011 Product of the Year Award for creating outstanding advancements in communications. CONTEX Presenter has proven benefits for its customers and provides ROI for the companies that use it,” said Rich Tehrani, CEO at TMC. “Congratulations to the entire team at Compunetix. I look forward to more innovative solutions from them in the coming year.”

At the recent SIP Network Operators Conference, Dan York, senior content strategist of the Internet Society, paointed out that, though SIP works fine in either IPv4 or IPv6 environments, it tends to run into trouble in mixed environments. The solution most enterprises are turning to during the transition to IPv6 is dual stacks on clients. Some devices, however, just won't be able to handle both addressing protocols.

"The biggest challenge we will see is there are a lot of IP phones out there – desktop phones, hard phones – that have limited memory and embedded operating systems, and may not have a dual-stack capability," said York.

That about wraps it up for this week in review. Be sure to check out the main SIP Phones Channel for more news in this sector!
