Sigma Designs New Product to Feature ANADIGICS' DOCSIS 3.0 Amplifier

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

ANADIGICS, Inc., a provider of semiconductor solutions, reportedly has announced that its ARA2017 programmable gain amplifier, optimized for DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem applications, will now be featured in Sigma Designs’ (News - Alert) new multi-channel, multi-standard, IP-Cable set-top box reference design, “Tru2way SMP8634.”

Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification is an international standard.

ANADIGICS ARA2017 is a linear, high output power, programmable gain amplifier optimized for DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. The amplifier’s balanced circuit design provides superior harmonic performance. Additionally, it’s integrated, digitally controlled multiple-stage precision step attenuator allow system solutions to meet DOCSIS power step accuracy requirements.

Sigma Designs is a fabless semiconductor provider of highly integrated system-on-chip solutions that are used to deliver multimedia entertainment throughout the home. Sigma’s SoC solutions include media processing, wireless communications, and video image processing in addition to the system software that are critical components of consumer electronic products.

Sigma’s Tru2way SMP8634-based reference design from Sigma is a turnkey solution developed for deployment in existing cable TV systems and has an integrated cable modem and VoIP capability.

The new design enables a virtually unlimited channel lineup for cable systems to display (or record) up to three channels simultaneously. Fast upstream and downstream DOCSIS data channels are also supported. ANADIGICS’ ARA2017 offers a reverse path amplification in this design that allows it to support high linearity and power levels for channel bonding and thereby to deliver an upstream data rate of 120 Mbps. The downstream data rate is as high as 160Mbps.

Ken Lowe, vice president of strategic marketing at Sigma Designs, said, “Our new design leverages ANADIGICS’ DOCSIS 3.0-based technology to provide manufacturers with an industry-leading, next generation home entertainment product. ANADIGICS’ DOCSIS 3.0 programmable gain amplifier is an industry first and, as such, it adds a critical element to the overall performance and functionality of our STB design.”

“The ARA2017 is integral to the performance of DOCSIS 3.0 hybrid set-top boxes and cable modem products,” said, Ron Michels, senior vice president and general manager of ANADIGICS’ Broadband Business.
